The National Rifle Association (NRA) is recognized as the foremost defender of our Second Amendment rights, but just as important is the NRA’s leadership as the nation’s preeminent source for firearm Safety and Training!

The NRA offers Certification Courses and Training to anyone interested in shooting and self-defense, from beginners to experienced competitive, law enforcement or military shooters.  Safety is the cornerstone of all shooting, and it is reinforced by us at every NRA certification course or Private – Non-NRA training session we offer. Sun State offers three NRA Certified Pistol Courses:
  1. The NRA Basic Pistol Course
  2. The NRA Personal Protection In The Home Course (PPITH)
  3. The NRA Personal Protection Outside of The Home Course (PPOTH)

All courses are conducted by Warren J. Sonne, a Certified NRA Pistol Instructor and retired NYPD Detective.  Sonne is also a Glock Certified Armorer and active USPSA/IPSC, Steel Challenge and Glock Shooting Sports Foundation (GSSF) competitive shooter. These courses are given in Port St. Lucie, or they can be arranged for at a location near you.

PRIVATE LESSONS: In addition to the NRA Basic Pistol, Personal Protection In The Home and Personal Protection Outside of The Home Courses,  private lessons are also available for those interested in advancing their shooting skills for concealed carry, home-defense or competitive shooting.

COURSE ONE About the NRA Basic Pistol Course: This Certification qualifies you for the Florida Concealed Carry Permit (CCW).  While the NRA describes this as it’s Basic Pistol Course, it is actually an advanced course for most people who have already obtained a CCW Permit or who simply own a pistol for home protection.  Anyone who will be handling a pistol should consider this NRA Basic Pistol course as the cornerstone of safe gun handling.  In addition to the Classroom Training, each student will fire 100 rounds of ammunition (cost of ammo is not included) under the direct supervision of Warren Sonne with a 2 to 1 student/instructor ratio. The NRA Basic Pistol Course is described on the NRA Website as follows:   Short Description : Teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude for owning and operating a pistol safely.

More Details: This course is at least 8-hours long and includes classroom and range time learning to shoot revolvers and semi-automatic pistols. Students learn NRA’s rules for safe gun handling; pistol parts and operation; ammunition; shooting fundamentals; range rules; shooting from the bench rest position, and two handed standing positions; cleaning the pistol; and continued opportunities for skill development. Students will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, take a Basics of Pistol Shooting Student Examination, and course completion certificate. COURSE THREE About the NRA Basics of Personal Protection Outside The Home Course

Short Description : Teaches students the knowledge, skills and attitude essential for avoiding dangerous confrontations and for the safe, effective and responsible use of a concealed pistol for self-defense outside the home.
More Details: Prerequisite: This course is for adult individuals who are not disqualified from possessing a firearm as defined by applicable federal, state, or local law and are of good repute and possess defensive pistol skills presented in the NRA Basics of Personal Protection In The Home Course. Description: The course is divided into two levels. Level one is nine-hours and offers the essential knowledge and skills that must be mastered in order to carry, store, and use a firearm safely and effectively for personal protection outside the home. Upon completion, students may choose to attend level two, which is an additional five hours on the range and approximately 115 rounds of ammunition learning advanced shooting skills.
